SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE CHANGE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

Most all organizations deal with a multitude of changes. Some changes can be relatively minor while others can be highly complex, politically and emotionally charged, multifaceted, and difficult to successfully implement. Effective change management practices can help minimize miscommunication, confusion, and resistance to the changes. Effective change management practices can also reduce the time and cost associated with successfully driving change, help maintain and improve employee engagement and support of the changes, and also strengthen the organization’s ability to manage change in the future.

The Challenge with Change Management Practices

There has been extensive research over many decades on what makes for effective change management practices. This research has led to the development of various viewpoints, models, processes, tools, and methods to drive effective change management. The challenge is that many of these approaches are overly complex, time consuming, and ironically can be difficult to adopt. Change management programs often neglect the reality that many organizations face – that change does not have a nice and clean “start” and “finish” and that many if not most organizations are dealing with close to nonstop, continuous, and often concurrent changes. Further, some change management approaches are too rigid and tend to have a “one size fits all” approach, without sufficient consideration of the uniqueness of a given organization.
